Answer- The groundwater can be contaminated by two way mainly,

  • Anthropogenic sources-. These are the source which are human induced and they are man made products like gasoline chemical get into the ground water. The sewage water percolating, the chemicals from fertilizers percolating into the ground water during the irrigation, and also infiltration through the harmful landfills. Salt water intrusion due to excessive pumping in coastal areas.
  • Natural sources- The percolation of ground water through different mineral deposits, Dissolution of minerals through which ground water passes.

It is lot easier not to pollute groundwater than to clean it.

  • Eliminating pollution source.
  • Moniter the extent of pollutant
  • Bioremediation- treating ground water in aquifer by the help of microorganisms.
  • Chemical remediation- same but here chemicals are pumped into the aquifer.
  • Air sparging - That is subsurface contaminant remediation.
