The IUPAC name of alkenes is obtained by using following rules.

1)Select the longest and continuous chain of carbon atoms containing carbon-carbon double bond.

2)Number the carbon atoms from that end which is nearest to the double bond

3)Count the number of carbon atoms in the selected chain. The alkene is considered as derivative of corresponding parent alkane

4) The name of alkene is derived by replacing suffix 'ane' in the name of parent alkane by 'ene'

5)The position of the carbon atom from which the double bond starts is indicated by the smallest number

6)The Locantt indicating the position of double bond is place immediately before the suffix 'ene'

7) If the double bond is equidistant from the two ends number the carbon atoms from that end which is nearer to the first branching. See the image ...
