All microorganisms require nutrient for their growth if we want to study microorganisms, identify and other characteristics we should provide them a specialized media.
e.g.
- Minimal media
- Selective media
- Differential media
- Transport media
By Minimal medium we can get Nutrient requirement, by Selective media we can get a particular type of bacteria( EMB agar for E. coli), Differential media, differentiate different type bacteria (MacConkey agar differentiate between other and lactose fermenting Bacteria).
Best example of specialized media is EMB (Eosin methylene blue) which is selective media for E.coli which contain methylene blue dye which is toxic to gram +ve bacteria and give a metallic sheen to E.coli
