When Brian looked under the microscope, he found bacteria
thriving inside the amoebae. He was surprised and called Sid over
to look. “Wow, that’s unexpected. I wonder what would happen if you
add antibiotics to some of the amoebae.” Brian thought about the
other experiments he was supposed to be doing , but then decided he
was interested enough to continue with this side project. He took
Sid’s suggestion and added antibiotics to some of the amoebae. When
he added antibiotics to the amoebae infected with bacteria, those
amoebae died. When Sid heard this news he was excited and began
talking about the endosymbiosis hypothesis.
3. What cell type is an antibiotic designed to kill?
4. Would you have predicted the amoebae to have died by adding an antibiotic? Why or why not?
5. What controls would you expect to see and what would these tell you?
6. What scientist is credited for first proposing the endosymbiosis hypothesis? Explain the hypothesis. Do Brian’s results provide support for it? Why or why not?

Endosymbiosis Case study& Questions: Brian slumped over his bench in the lab and put his head down in defeat. "What's the matter?" asked his lab mate, Sid. Brian explained that his amoebae had all become infected with bacteria. Frustrated and feeling like his experiments were never going to lead to a Ph.D., he left the lab for the weekend. After the weekend, Brian returned fresh and ready to start his experiments with new amoebae. Although most of his infected amoebae...
Procedure Four different colors of beads, representing four species of bacteria, all possible residents of the microbiome, will be utilized. The species differ naturally in their resistance to a particular antibiotic. Three different antibiotic treatment regimens will be modeled: following doctor’s orders ending antibiotic treatment early skipping Day 3 of treatment Your initial population of bacteria is represented as follows: 40 beads that represent Species 1, the most susceptible to the antibiotic (susceptible on Day 1 of treatment) 30 beads...
Kevin Lowe is depressed. He has been with the CPA firm Stooges LLP for only three months. Yet the partners in charge of the firm—Bo Chambers and his brother, Moe—have asked for a “sit-down.” Here’s how it goes: “Kevin, we asked to see you because your time reports indicate that it takes you 50 percent longer to complete audit work than your predecessor,” Moe said. “Well, I am new and still learning on the job,” replied Lowe. “That’s true,” Bo...
Mary Benninger had sought out her old friend, Tom Chu, to discuss her employment situation. Mary and Tom had both graduated in 1985 from Mackenzie King University, and then studied together to attain their CMA designations in 1988. Soon thereafter, Tom was promoted quickly within his division of a large multi-national auto supply company, and now held the position of vice-president/controller. Mary, on the other hand, had temporarily removed herself from full-time employment in 1990 to raise her young daughter....
“We should investigate further. Maybe something new about Colony Collapse Disorder has been found,” Mark said. He was worried, not only because of the effects this was having on the emotional and economic standing of his family, but for what this meant for pollinating honeybee colonies all over the United States. Tanya entered the room reading an article titled “Solving the Mystery of the Vanishing Bees” that she had found inScientific American. “Look at this excerpt from an article by...
Lauren’s balancing Act DeMarco’s Department Store manager Lauren Brewster’s “Wow” moment came when she observed a Chicago restaurant staff ’s gushing treatment of an international celebrity. “Everyone dreams of that kind of star treatment,” Lauren told her assistant, Jack Klein. “Think about it. People brag about their bank or the local bar where ‘everybody knows your name,’ or enjoy showing off a favorite restaurant where the hostess always remembers their favorite table.” DeMarco’s, like other upscale department stores, suffered the...

Can you answer only question 5and 6 Questions: 1. How could the promotion of UK Hoover have been better designed? Be as specific as you can. 2. Given the fiasco that did occur, how do you think Maytag should have responded? 3. Comment on the following statement: “Firing the three top executives of UK Hoover is unconscionable. It smacks of a vendetta against European managers by an American parent. After all, their only ‘crime’ was a promotion that was too...
