To generate heat and release it to the surroundings, we need an exothermic process and the one which is suitable for use in a hot pack for warming the hands.

The standard enthalpy of combustion of Fe(s) is -1117.1 kJ per mole of Fe.

The reaction between iron (Fe) and moist air(O2) to produce rust is a exothermic process that generates lots of heat. But, this particular reaction takes place so slowly that the releasing of heat is undetectable.
