This is a well-designed experiment to study the process of breathing. In this experiment, as diaphragm is pulled down resulting in space inside or cavity increases, which results in lowering in level of pressure and causes air to enter to equalize the effect. On the reverse side, pulling up of the diaphragm causes air to evacuate from the balloons and balance the pressure in the cavity. If balloons gets punctured this functioning of breathing gets affected and process gets stopped.
