It also is responsible for racial and gender discrimination. Stereotype threat occurs due to situational differences among people, not the due race and social identity.

Stereotype threat refers to the experience which is psychological due to the confrontation with specific social identity related negative stereotype.

This was proposed by Claude Steele and J. Parindon in 1955 stereotype threat is closely associated with stigma.

For example, A black young boy feels that he will face racism in the presence of white boys or an old woman may become tense if she forgot something important that people think she is senile.

Stigma refers to a factor that adversely affects and reduces credits of an individual in a situation.

For example, black people treated negatively in the education field but in the basketball field, they are treated positively due to attachment of culture with social identity.

Three type of stigma is given below:

1. The stigma of character traits refers to the discredits the character of individual. For example, false beliefs, rigidness, alcoholism, suicidal attempt, cheating, unemployment etc.

2. The stigma of physical characteristics or body: it is associated with physical weakness and incapability.

3. The stigma of the tribe or tribal stigma: it is associated with the stigma due to race, culture, and linkage.

This stigma passes from one generation to another generation.

People facing stereotype threat in a particular situation that makes the task more difficult to them. Stereotype threat may cause a lack of concentration and interest and lesser achievement.

In order to combat the stereotype threat one should take the following steps:

1. Develop the growth-oriented mind.

2. Rethink about the anxiety of bad performance.

3. Believe in yourself and develop self-confidence.

4. Stop labelling yourself as a particular race or stereotype.

5. Imagine you are the future self.
