Answer #1

a) Glycerol has three hydroxyl (OH) groups which makes the compound polar and gives rise to similar properties as that of water. It can easily make hydrogen bonding with water molecules. This increases solubility of glycerol in water. But in hydrocarbons, it is insoluble. The increased polar character makes it insoluble in hydrocarbon solvent.

b) Alcohol C16H33OH is a higher alcohol which contains a long chain of 16 carbons. Lower alcohols are soluble in water because of the presence of OH group. But as we move to higher alcohols, the solubility decreases in water. The long chain makes the compound non-polar and thus makes t water repellant. So, this alcohol is insoluble in water. But as it becomes non polar, so it is soluble in hydrocarbon solvent.
