In the first section, the author, Jane McGonigal, points out a crucial factor that we miss out about the world of games. It is often claimed that virtual world is a waste of time and energy and the younger generation usually gets addicted to it irrespective of time and health conditions. Jane claims that virtual world fulfills genuine human needs that the real world fails to provide. Human minds always desire for acceptance and encouragements. Real world usually fail to do so while the world of games drive the person towards success in a very short period of time, realises, inspires and accepts the gamer's talent and encourages him for his achievement that forces him to attain higher levels of success that he fails to attain in reality.
In McGonigal's "Reality is broken", she states that games creat an optimistic sense about our own capabilities and rushes us to achieve more. Increasing number of gamers and time spend by them is the best factor that proves the intensity of impact of games in achieving the psychological needs of a person. She claims that a substantial portion of the population devotes majority of their time in achieving their unachievable real world goals through games, nurture their experiences from the game environment and attains the highest success that they fail to do in the real world.
Rewards, inspiration, acceptance, goal achievement, all these are human wants. When they find it hard to fulfill, games provide an escapism where they get a sense of pride and satisfaction.
