Suppose a four period weighted average is being used to forecast demand. Weights for the periods are:

wt-4 = 0.1

wt-3 = 0.2

wt-2 = 0.35

wt-1 = 0.35

Demand observed in the previous four periods was:

At-4 = 15890

At-3 = 14970

At-2 = 14478

At-1 = 14628

What will be the demand forecast for period t? (Keep one decimal place in your answer).

Answer #1

Demand forecast for period t

= Wt-1 x at-1 + Wt-2 x At-2 + Wt-3 x At-3 + Wt-4 x At-4

= 0.35 x 14628 + 0.35 x 14478 + 0.2 x 14970 + 0.1 x 15890

= 5119.80 + 5067.3 + 2994 + 1589

= 14770.1

Demand forecast for period t = 14470.1
