Last year, Amazon delivered more than 5 billion (with a "B") luxury products, and the ecommerce market share of the supermarket giant in the U.S. is expected to reach 50%.
It requires an amazing amount of technological expertise, personnel, and logistics systems to push this sort of quantity. Although Amazon depends on third parties for logistics and warehousing, in an effort to handle the whole operation, the organization is now developing an rapidly growing delivery network.
Today 's analysis, which incorporates detailed data from MWPVL International, explores the approximate 124 million square feet of active space in the U.S., as well as the 40 million miles of development infrastructure in Amazon.
We used satellite images of every Amazon facility in the U.S. to build our graphical footprint of Amazon's warehouses in the infographic, and stitched it all together.
The Puzzle Pieces
There are a few types of facilities which make up Amazon 's large warehouses network:
Cross-dock balls
Containers from international suppliers can be stored in a cross-dock warehouse before more stock at the distribution center is required. This is the back end of the chain of delivery.
Completion Centres
Fulfillment centers are the most common type of facility in the delivery system of Amazon but they serve a wide variety of purposes.
In 1997, Amazon started to develop its delivery network, beginning with two fulfillment centers in Seattle and Delaware. Compared to existing standards, the two rooms will be small at 93,000 and 202,000 square feet respectively. Today, the total distribution center capacity is almost 100 million square feet, with another 35 million on the way.
Centers for types
Such services are responsible for sorting zip code packets that are then usually sent to USPS locations. Sortation centers have helped Amazon to speed up the delivery process since its introduction in 2014 and help monitor the fulfillment process up to "the last mile."
Stations for Distribution
Delivery stations are frequently the last step in the chain in metropolitan cities, before deliveries meet a client. Courier firms – including Amazon Flex carriers increasingly – are usually handling these short-range deliveries. Such stations are also in proximity to airports.
Hubs Prime Today
Especially built for pace are the smaller places. Prime Now hubs have a more restricted range of items that are shipped within two hours of pressing "order," like Whole Foods products. Roughly 50 of those facilities actually operate in metropolitan areas across the United States, although that figure is projected to rise significantly in the immediate future.
Prime Climate Core
Amazon will not currently own its own airport, but the newly announced $1.5B Prime Air Hub International is a step in that direction.
Amazon's 210-acre holdings would further boost its Prime Air fleet while reducing reliance on firms such as UPS and FedEx. Kentucky is a natural option for the hub, as 11 fulfillment centers already operate in the county.
Combat to the Last Mile
Amazon has streamlined every part of the delivery system over the years but there is one more obstacle.
Conquering the last mile – the last leg before a shipment hits its target – proved to be difficult, partially because USPS already has a well-honed plan to send to all citizens in the country.
The company 's earnest recruitment drive for Amazon Flex is the latest in a long line of attempts to decrease reliance on third parties for package delivery. In turn, Amazon aims to cut prices and offer greater versatility during sales spikes like Black Friday, by employing on-demand staff
The ability to own the entire operation is mirrored in the delivery facility roster of the organization. The large distribution centers aren't going anywhere, but we may see far smaller shipping centers across America in cities and towns.
