Environmental Sustainability at Tesco PLC., UK
Tesco PLC is the largest retailer in the United Kingdom and the
third-largest grocery retailer in the world, with operations in 14
countries. The company manages its business using a model called
Steering Wheel (SW), which is basically a balanced scorecard
comprising the key elements of business: customers, operations,
people, finance, and community. Environmental sustainability
aspects are integrated into SW as part of the community
element.
Tesco recognizes that tackling climate change is fundamental to its
environmental strategies. It has set out three strategies as part
of its climate change program: Leading by example, reducing own
direct carbon footprint; Working with its supply chains and
partners to reduce emissions more broadly; and leading a revolution
in green consumption.
In addition to the climate change strategy, the company is actively
involved in reducing waste, improving recycling, reducing
unnecessary packaging, and promoting the use of sustainable
products with minimal adverse impact on biodiversity. It regularly
sets its own targets and aims to achieve the targets. In the past
few years, the company has registered impressive performances in
terms of setting and achieving targets: including being the first
major retailer to carbon label 100 own-brand products in Ireland
and the United Kingdom; New stores have been built using
environmentally sustainable materials and principles, and the
company halved its energy use per square foot in its UK stores
(against a baseline of 2000).
Some targets the company set for itself, as per its Corporate
Responsibility Report 2009, including halving emissions from
existing buildings and new stores by 2020 and halve distribution
emissions of each case of goods delivered by 2012, against a
baseline of 2006.
Notable among the achievements of Tesco PLC in terms of
environmental sustainability are the following:
•The company committed around $40 million to create the new Sustainable Consumption Institute (SCI) at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.
• The company set for itself a target of halving the avenge energy use in its buildings compared to 2000 levels and achieved this target two years early in 2008.
• It created the Sustainable Technology Fund to support environmentally sustainable technologies that are not yet commercially viable.
• The company reduced the amount of carbon emitted in the distribution network by 10%. It encourages the use of fully electric vans for its home delivery fleet.
• In 2008, the company reduced the amount of waste going into landfills by over one-third. It has set a target of diverting 95% of the waste away from landfills.
Through these initiatives, Tesco is aiming to be a leader in the global retailing market in terms of environmental sustainability.

After reading case , It has been quite clear that Tesco is a resource focused company along with completing the global regulatory standards and preserving its reputation in the marketplace. Its steering wheel model has been created a performance standard along the financial, customer focused and sustainable business operations across the world.
It has created an institute to promote sustainable development research and innovation which will ultimately offer its reputation in marketplace against the growing competition. Reducing the waste can be seen as resource utilization with building again a good image in the industry level. Using electric powered fleet can be seen as an effort to use sustainable resources and reducing cost of operations.
In this way , we can summarize that Tesco is building constant efforts to increase its sustainable resources, following the legal framework and increasing its reputation in marketplace along with global industry.
