It's possible to boil water by adding hot rocks to it, a technique that has been used in many societies over time. If you heat a rock in the fire, you can easily get it to a temperature of 500∘C. If you use granite or other similar stones, the specific heat is about 800 J/(kg⋅K).
If 5.0 kg of water at 10∘C is in a leak-proof vessel, what minimum number of 1.0 kg stones must be added to bring the water to a boil?
Heat required to boil water
Q = mc dT
= 5 x 4180 x (100-10) = 1881000 J
Mass of stones
1881000 = m x 800 x (500-100)
m = 5.87kg
ABout 6 stones required

6. (2 points) You are given 400 g of coffee (same specific heat as water) at 95.0°C (too hot to SS drink). How much ice (at 0.0°C) must be added to your coffee in order to cool it to 50.0°C? Neglect heat content of the cup and heat exchanges with the surroundings. Latent heat of fusion of ice is 3.33x10 J/kg: Specific heat of ice is 2100 J/(kgx°C). You must know the specific heat of water....
For the preparation and standardization of NaOH with KHP im supposed to boil water for 1hr and 30 min to remove CO2....the problem is that if I don't boil it for that long and (30 min) b/c of not enough time but I put the water I boiled for 1/2 hr aproximately into a NaOH bottle with a CO2 absorber and stored it there for a few days. I would assume that I would have to boil the water again...but...
