Michael chaney, an associate English professor at Dartmouth college tells us how to read graphic novels. The motive of photography is interwoven in many graphic novels providing an interesting back drop of realism. Discussion of graphic novel should be considered as an activator prior to reading any of the books. He talks about the form and structure of graphic novel finding them to get meaning of visual narrative and appreciate it fully. He uses the reference of a book: Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi's profusely, because it has indepth content in just few panels.

Chaney gets the idea that we process cartoons differently than still photography, whereas cartooning gives us character whuch readers believe as "present" narrative.

Photography is an image suggesting that something which happened to the person is not happening again. It also does not show what happened before and after the photography.
