A new antibiotic was just approved by the FDA. It is named Aliomycin, and acts much like Oligomycin. With this information and using what we have learned in Unit One, what can you predict about Aliomycin? (What is the relationship with ATP? What about oxygen?)

Answer #1

Oligomycins are macrolides created by Streptomyces that can be poisonous to other organisms.

So like Oligomycin A, Aliomycin inhibits ATP synthase by blocking its proton channel (Fo subunit), which is necessary for oxidative phosphorylation of ADP to ATP (energy production). The inhibition of ATP synthesis by oligomycin A/Aliomycin will significantly reduce electron flow through the electron transport chain; however, electron flow is not stopped completely due to a process known as proton leak or mitochondrial uncoupling.

The hemoglobinopathies encompass all genetic diseases of hemoglobin. They fall into two main groups: thalassemia syndromes and structural hemoglobin variants (abnormal hemoglobins). α- and β-thalassemia are the main types of thalassemia; the main structural hemoglobin variants are HbS, HbE and HbC.

Hemoglobin H increases the affinity for oxygen. The levels can be normal to increased in beta thalassemia. Hemoglobin F frequently increases in individuals with sickle cell anemia and sickle cell-beta thalassemia. Individuals with sickle cell and increase of Hb F have a milder case of the disease.

Your classmate is excited to tell you about something they just learned. There’s a toxin named ouabain that was used by East Africans to make poison arrows. “And guess what-ouabain kills people by blocking the sodium/potassium pump that we learned about in BILD 1!” But your classmate is confused about something. “The sodium/potassium pump moves sodium and potassium ions against the concentration gradients, in the opposite direction of how the ions would normally go. But in class we said that...

Problem 5: A negatively charged muon acts just like a heavy electron, but with a much larger mass. It can bind to a proton to form an atom. The muon mass mu is 209 me. This is large enough to make the proton itself move as the muon goes round it, but we will ignore that effect in answering this question.
