Answer #1
Test tube

observation;

soluble or insoluble

in acetone

Was the alcohol soluble in acetone,yet insoluble in water? Yes/No

ethanol soluble,easily soluble No/soluble in water
1-butanol soluble No /less soluble in water
1-pentanol soluble yes/,insoluble
1-hexanol slightly soluble yes,/insoluble
1-octanol slightly soluble yes/,insoluble

ABILITY OF ACETONE AS A SOLVENT FOR ORGANIC COMPOUNDS

Acetone is the simplest ketone.Acetone is a good solvent,a solvent has the ability to dissolve other substances.Acetone is good good solvent dueto its ability to dissolve both polar and non polar substances.Other solvents dissolves only in one.Acetone can be used with both organic and inorganic compounds.Acetone is highly volatile and completely miscible in water. Acetone reacts with alcohol forms hemiacetal.Acetone has the ability to dissolve organic compound due to its lower boiling point and lower density.

  • Smaller alcohols methanol,ethanol ,and propanol dissolve easily in water.This is due to water has the ability to form hydrogen bonds with hydroxyl groups in these molecules.
  • The longer chain alcohols like pentanol,hexanol,heptanol,and octanol are non soluble.It is due to larger alcohols have larger non polar ,hydrophobic regions in addition to thier hydrophilic hydroxyl group.Longer chain alcohols have less solubility in water.
