Bacteria possess huge diversity in metabolic pathways. Some bacteria perform fermentation including the ones used for making yogurt or beer. Some bacteria use anaerobic mode of respiration, in habitats like marine sediments (for example members of the Desulfuromonadaceae family); this means using anything from sulfate or nitrate to oxidized uranium ions as oxidizing agents. Fermentation based anaerobes can survive in oxygenated environments, but other anaerobic microbes find oxygen toxic as it disrupts their metabolism by acting as a strong oxidizing agent. There are also bacteria which possess aerobic respiration. They can further be of two typess i,e obligate aerobes and facultative anaerobes. Obligate aerobes must have an oxygenated environment in order to survive where as the facultative aerobes can perform fermentation in case there is no oxygen.
