Evolutionary change in trait can be calculated from heritability and selectio differential.

ΔZ = h2S

Here Z = mean of this trait in the population

ΔZ = change in the mean of trait over one generation

S = Selection differential

In the above question selection ΔZ is given as 2 inches . h2 is given as 0.49. Putting these values in the equation we get -:2 = 0.49 x S

S = -2/0.49 = - 4.1 inches.

Here the change is trait ΔZ is given a minus sign since there is an average decrease in height in the next generation.
