Question: 6. How is sex determined among animals? you may choose an animal you want to use
Sol: In animals, sex is determined by sex chromosomes, generally by the combinations of different sex chromosomes such as XY, ZW, XO or ZO
Example : Human beings (XY- males, XX- Females)
In Humans, Maleness is due to a dominant effect of 'Y' chromosome
On the Y chromosome a gene called 'SRY' gene or 'Sex determining Region on Y' is present
SRY gene is responsible for the production of Testes Determining Factor (TDF)
Production of TDF induce the embryonic gonads to develop into testes
Testes produce testosterone hormone that induce male sexual characters
In females (XX) there is no Y chromosome is present and no SRY gene product is formed or no TDF is produced
In the absence of TDF, no testosterone is produced
In the absence of Testosterone, embryonic gonads develop into ovaries
