Autotrophs have the capacity to generate their own food. Animals don't have these mechanisms, they are totally dependent over others.

Cellular respiration occurs in each cell of animals to create energy after breakdown the oxygen.

Now in cellular respiration glucose breakdown occurs by the help of oxygen and generates ATP. Autotrophs are the glucose provider during the process. Thats why it is so essential.
