The marathon runner needs mainly glucose and protein as a fuel and fluids, glucose in the blood is used to supplement the intramuscular fat and carbohydrates that are the primary fuels for marathon running

The weight lifter hoping to gain strength needs carbohydrates and fluids as a fuel because Carbohydrate is important for muscle building because they're protein-sparing  Consuming carbs after-workout can prevent muscle loss and help repair muscles.

marathon runners and weight lifter both need protein because it keeps your body healthy under all that strain. Adequate protein intake accelerates muscle growth and speeds recovery by helping rebuild muscle fibers stressed during running and weight lifting So, protein helps muscles heal faster.
