The RNA virus, f2, of E. coli is seven times as resistant to UV light as the DNA virus φX174. Also, f2 does not undergo photo-reactivation. Fully explain each of these observations.

UV radiation from the sun is the primary germicide in the environment. The number of bases in the DNA or RNA is important for determining sensitivity to UV activation.most common lethal photoproduct of UV are pyrimidine dimers particularly thymine dimer. DNA contains thymine so DNA containing viruses are more sensitive to damage by UV than RNA containing viruses.

Photoreactivation is found exclusively in organelles containing DNA, DNA free mini cells of an E.coli show little or no activity.
