Answer #1

When disaster strikes, an ecosystem can change very quickly. When an event causes a drastic decreases in a population , it can cause a type of genetic drift called a bottleneck effect.

A bottleneck effect can be caused by a natural disaster, like an earthquake or volcano eruption. Today, it is also often caused by humans through over-hunting, deforestation and pollution.

When most members of a population die suddenly, genetic variation goes down and the frequencies at which different alleles are found in the population can change dramatically.

When disaster strikes, only a few random individuals make it out alive. Maybe it can only be either A,B or C.over time, the population grows again, but now the majority of members are either A,B or C any one and there can be a few of the one group from the other two. This is very different from the original population before the disaster happened.

This illustrates that when a bottleneck event happens, the variety in a population can decrease and the proportions of different alleles can change completely.

Refer to the figure below. You are studying a remote island before and after a volcanic eruption. Data at time 1 was collected one month before the eruption, and data at time 2 was collected one month after the eruption. All of the species on the island are endemic. The island is 100 km across. Species A and B (the two snail species) generally only move a distance of 2 m a day. Species C (the bird) often covers 20...

Which of the following statements regarding the Hardy-Weinberg Equation is TRUE? Answers: It can only be used when allele and genotype frequencies remain constant across generations in a population It can only be used when allele and genotype frequencies change across generations in a population It has no assumptions It mathematically shows how recessive alleles in a population decrease over time It reveals when allele frequencies change over time in a population Assuming Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium, what percentage of individuals in...

QUESTION 2 Climate change is a threat to the existence of many species. Which of the following limits to natural selection hinders the adaptation of species to the new climate conditions? The developmental plans of plants and animals are too complex. They cannot cope with the warmer temperatures. Mutations happen so frequently that beneficial alleles change before natural selection can substantially increase their frequency Many species not have gene variants in their gene pool that are beneficial in higher temperatures. Climate change happens so...
