If a mutant ARF1 GTPase is unable to hydrolyze GTP when it is being recruited to the Golgi membrane, the proteins which are normally recognised and are coated with secretory vesicles and transmitted to the plasma membrane does not happen.Due to mutations in Ras related protein ADP - ribosylation factor1 (ARF1) , the ability of this protein in its GTP state to bind to coatomer, which is a cytosolic protein complex does not happen. And due to this alterations, there are unbound proteins without coatomer, which are not recognised further to be processed for their successful anterograde transport to the plasma membrane of the cells. These mutants also inhibit vesicular transport as they are not recognised due to absence of COPII on their surfaces.As the proteins cannot be successfully transmitted from golgi to further regions , they starts accumulating in between the trans cisternal spaces and cytoplasm as well. There are certain mechanisms of their transport back to ER which are furnished by specific proteins.
