The exaggerated plumage and colors of male birds is thought to result from to different theories: runaway selection and the handicap principal. Using an example, explain the difference between these two theories.

runaway selection is also called as fisherian runaway. is an explanation first proposed by english statistician Ronald Aylmer Fisher in 1930s. it says that the female's choice cause deleterious characteristic development in males and change in male characteristics doesn't equal to higher quality.

handicap hypothesis proposed by Amotz Zahavi in 1975. according to him, the females only assess those traits that are honest indicators of male fitness and are costly to produce and maintain.

a common example for both of them is peacocks tail feathers. the peacock tail in flight, the classic example of an ornament assumed to be a fisherian runaway. and is an handicapped signal of male quality too.
