There are two mechanism by which halophiles survive in the highly saline environment.
The first is employed by the majority of halophilic bacteria, some archaea, yeasts, algae and fungi in which organic compounds are accumulated in the cytoplasm and acts as osmoprotectants which are known as compatible solutes. These organic compounds are either synthesised by these organisms or accumulated from the environment.The most common compatible solutes are neutral or zwitterionic, which include amino acids, sugars, polyols, betaines, and ectoines, as well as derivatives of some of these compounds.
The second, adaptation involves the selective influx of potassium (K+) ions into the cytoplasm which prevents the movement of water to the outside of cytoplasm.
