Actually normally the number of generations that we go upto is 2, that is Filial 1 ( F1) and then Filial 2 (F2). But uptill here, the recessive genotype is not that evident as it normally occurs in 1/16 ratio if the organism follows mendelian characters.

So, in order to get significant numbers of our recessive parental genotypes, we can go upto Filial 3 ( F3) generation as well.

So, normally it is taken as 2 but the limit is upto 3.
