1Why was Thomas Jefferson so pleased to find an abundance of sugar maple trees during his trip to New England?

. When Thomas Jefferson and James Madison headed north from Newyork cityon May 21,1791 for a trip to New york and New England. Americans wre sweetening their tea and baked goods with white cane sugar produced by slaves in the British West Indies and is imported from Great Britian , America's erstwhile enemy. Jefferson was already a proponent of using maple sugar instead of cane , largely as a result of his friendship with Benjamin Rough, the Philadelphia abolitionist. At a stop in Bennington Vermont he met with local dignitaries, including Governor Moses Robinsonand Vermont Gazette editor Anthony Haswell, who reported on Jefferson's championing of maple sugar production and optimistic calculations of how much the US demand for sweetness the local product could supply. Jefferson had already been attempts to grow maple trees at Monticello, and on his return trip he placed in order for sugar maples with a nursery on Long Island.For the rest of his life he continued to puchase, use and promote maple sugar as a replacement for cane, even as slave labor maintained his lifestyle at Monticello.

  1. ugwort (Artemisia vulgaris):

Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) belongs to the genus Artemisia and is a well known aromatic peennial plant with a characteric scent, and possess multiple medicinal applications, such as emmenagogue, nervine,digestive,diuretic and diaphoretic,food flavoring, and insect repellent properties. Aerial parts of Mugwort plant yeild an essential oil with contents varying between 0.1 and 1,4%.Mugwort essential oil , which is mainly composed of beta -pinene, alpha -pinene, camphor, and 1.8- cincole,has diverse applications including as an anti oxidant , anti bacterial, antifungal, food flavouring, and insect repellent.

2 Menyanthes (Menyanthes trifoliata):

Tonic, cathartic, deobstruent and febrifuge. An extract is made from the leaves , which possess strong tonic properties, and which renders great sevice in rheumatism,scurvy and skin diseases. An infusion of IOZ of the dried leaves to 1 pint of boiling water is taken in wine glasful doses , frequently repeated. It has also been recommended as an external application for dissolving glandular swellings. Finely powered buckbean leaves have been employed as a remedy for ague. being said to effect a cure when other means fail. In large doses the powder is also purgative . It is used also as a herb tobacco.. The juice of the fresh leaves has proved effacious in dropisical cases, and mixed with whey has been known to cure gout. Buckbean tea , taken alone or mixed with wornwood mcentaury or sage, is said to cure dyspepsia and a tropid liver.

3.. Arborvitae trees (Thuja occidentalis):

Thuja is a tree. The leaves and leaf oil are used as medicine. Thuja is used for repiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, bacterial skin infections, and cold sores. It is also used for painful conditions including osteoarthritis and a nerve disorder that affects the face called trigeminal neuralgia.
