Extravagant ornamentation equals high survivorship. Male barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) have longer tail feathers than females and the length of male tail feathers varies in a population. Anders Moller wanted to know if the father's tail length was related to survivorship of his offspring. First, he needed to know the range of tail lengths among males. Tips for Choosing Graph Format Look at the data on tail length, then decide what type of graph to make. Ask yourself these questions: Are the measured values continuous? Are values measured for different categories? Do the data represent the range or distribution of values for a characteristic? What kind of graph will show an answer to the research question? If you need to show the range of values in a population, divide the data into bins (a range of values) to show the number (frequency) of individuals that fit in each bin. Bins should span the entire range of the data from minimum to maximum. Each bin must be the same size, i.e. each bin must include 5 mm or 10 points. To create equal size bins, you may need to include values slightly below the lowest actual data point in the lowest bin and values slightly above the highest actual data point in the highest bin. Example: letter grades are bins that include numeric grades within a certain range, usually 10 points. A bin can be labeled by the range of values within it, for example: 70 - 79. Bin size is usually chosen to create a histogram without gaps, meaning no bin has 0 as a frequency. If you need to show the relationship between two continuous variables, a scatterplot with 2 numeric axes is most useful. If you need to show the average value for a category (e.g. male v. female; control v. manipulated), a bar chart with categories on the x-axis and measured value on the y-axis is most useful.
