Simple squamous:
Appearance: They appear flat in shape and scale like. They are more wider than the height they possess.
Function:They function to allow the passive diffusion of materials and gases and in secretion of lubricating substance.
Location:Skin, capillary walls, lining of the alveoli, lining of blood vessels ,lymphatic vessels and lining of the heart.
Simple cuboidal
Appearance:They appear as cube shaped with the same proportion in their height and width.
Function:These cells function in secretion, absorption and excretion of materials.
Location:Found in kidney ducts and tubules, pancreatic ducts and salivary glands.
Simple columnar
Appearance:They appear column shaped and are taller and less wider. They may appear with cilia(ciliated) or without cilia(non cliliated).
Function:They function in the secretion of mucous and enzymes as well as in the process of absorption.
Location:Ciliated cells are found in bronchi, female reproductive tract and in the uterus while non ciliated cells are found in the digestive tract as well as in the urinary bladder.
Pseudostratified ciliated columnar:
Appearance:These cells appear as if they are made up of multiple layer of cells but are actually made up of a single layer of cells. There will be appearance of cilia.
Function:Secretion and movement of mucus.
Location:Upper respiratory tract and trachea
