Hydrogenation – to treat with hydrogen – is a chemical reaction between molecular hydrogen and another compound or element, usually in the presence of a catalyst such as nickel, palladium or platinum.

(a) Hydrogen atoms are added all the way around the benzene ring. A cyclohexane is formed

(b) Both trans-2-butene and cis-2-butene have two alkyl groups bonded to their sp2 carbons. On hydrogenation gives butane.

(c) complete hydrogenation gives ethane.
