1a) System software: It is the type of software which acts an interface between application software and system.

Features of system software:

  • It is difficult to design
  • It is low level language or we can simply say that it is written in machine language and which is only understood by machine.
  • It is difficult to manipulate
  • The speed of the system software is fast

Branch of the system software:

  1. Operating System: The operating system is the system which manages the hardware of the computer. The operating system consists of programs and data. OS also provide us with services so that we can execute the application program.
  2. Device driver:It is a computer program ,computer hardware candirectly interact with the higher computer programs with the help of device drivers .These device drivers act as an translator between the application of the user and the device hardware.
  3. Server:Server provide some important services to both private users and public users via the internet across a network.
  4. Utility software:It performs small tasks which are used to manage computer hardware and application software.
  5. Windowing system:It supports the implementation of windows manager.Windows system provide some important support to graphics hardware and pointing devices like keyboard and it is the component for the graphical user interface.

Examples for system software are compiler, assembler, debugger etc.

b)Application software: It is the type of software which runs as per user request and it is runs on the platform which is provided by system software.

Features of application software are:

  • It performs more specialized tasks like word processing ,spreadsheet, email etc.
  • It requires more storage space as it is bigger in size
  • Easy to design and more interactive to user
  • It is written in high level language

Branches of Application software:

1)World- processing software: It is used for creating, modifing, retreiving, viewing ,storing and printing documents.

2)Spreadsheet software: It is numeric data -analysis tool that allow us to create a computerised ledger

3)Database software:It is a collection of related data that is stored and retrieved according to user demand

4)Graphics software: It allow computer system for creating, editing drawing etc.

5)Educational software:It allow computer to be used as learning and teaching tool.

6)Entertainment tool:This types of app allows computer to be used as entertainment tool.

Examples for application software are word processor, web brower, media player etc.
