E.coli generally prefers Glucose as it's carbon source, but when it is less available from its environment, then it will get adapted to new available carbon sources.
Thus, when occasionally samples were removed from the populations and when their fitness for low glucose conditions was tested against that of wild E.coli strains, it can be observed that there is an increased ability to survive on simple sugars other than glucose.
Hence second option is the correct answer.
