Posterior pituitary is an extension of hypothalamus, because the cell body of neurons that release Oxytocin and ADH in the hypothalamus and their axons extend down into the posterior pituitary where they release these hormones into the bloodstream. Hypothalamus regulates the function of posterior pituatory, but it doesn't mean pituatory is a just only a physical extension of hypothalamus.

The pituitary is an important organ or gland in endocrine system, in which it secrete hormones into bloodstream.

The posterior pituitary gland does not produce neurohormones, but rather stores and secretes hormones produced by the hypothalamus. Nuclei found in hypothalamus: paraventricular nuclei produce the hormone oxytocin, and the supraoptic nuclei produce ADH.

This gland is found in all vertebrates and in humans, it is a pea-sized gland.
