Thermogenin is an uncoupling protein found in the mitochondria of brown adipose tissue.

Mitochondria produce ATP by oxidative phosphorylation.
Oxidative phosphorylation is mediated by the differential proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane.

Thermogenin is a transmembrane protein that decreases proton gradient produced by NADH and FADH2.
Thermogenin uncouples proton gradient from ATP production. So, mitochondria produce heat instead of ATP.
