The sequence of carbon dioxide transport in body -

1. Carbon dioxide is released from mitochondria.

Carbon dioxide is released from mitochondria as a byproduct of cellular metabolism.

2. Carbon dioxide diffuses into the capillary.

Carbon dioxide after dissociation moves to capillaries for transport to the lungs.

3. Carbon dioxide is carried to the lungs.

Carbon dioxide is carried to lungs in the dissolved form as bicarbonate in plasma and in a combined form with hemoglobin.

4. Carbon dioxide diffuses into alveoli.

Carbon dioxide moves from veins to alveoli, along the concentration gradient (high concentration to low concentration).

5. Air exits through mouth and nose.
