Answer #1

Solution:

The optical activity is shown by those compounds which rotate plane polarized light to clockwise or anticlockwise known as R and S isomer respectively. The compound which does not rotate plane polarized light are called as optically inactive. Chirality is essential criteria for optical activity. The compound, which contains chiral carbon, rotates plane polarized light.

A) A solution of 1-iodohexane:

1-iodohexane is optically inactive because it does not contains chiral carbon.

B) Solution of S-2-iodohexane:

(S)-2 iodohexane has a chiral centre, therefore, rotate plane polarized light to the anticlockwise (negative rotation), therefore optically active.

C) 40%(S)-3-chlorohexane and 60%(R)-3-chlorohexane rotate plane polarized light to clockwise (positive rotation) because it has more proportion of R (60%). Therefore, optically active.

D) Equal quantities of R and S-3-chlorohexane has both 50% R and 50% of S isomers. Therefore, net rotation will be equal to zero (because 50% positive rotation and 50% negative rotation) . Therefore, isomers are racemic mixture.

Hence, optically inactive.

IP Optically active molecules have the property of rotating the direction of polarization of linearly polarized light. Many biologically important molecules have this property, some causing a counterclockwise rotation (negative rotation angle), others causing a clockwise rotation (positive rotation angle). For example, a 5.00 gram per 100 mL solution of l-leucine causes a rotation of -0.550∘; the same concentration of d-glutamic acid causes a rotation of 0.620 ∘ . Part A) Find the transmitted intensity for each of these solutions...
