In eukaryotic cell cycle, metaphase is a stage of mitosis in which chromosomes align in the equator of the cell before being separated into each of the two daughter cells. This is a very short phase, about 4% of cell cycle.

The checkpoint during mitosis is also known as the M Checkpoint. During this checkpoint, the cell checks two parameters

  1. all the sister chromatids are correctly attached to the spindle microtubules
  2. alligned properly at the metaphase plate

As the separation of sister chromatids during anaphase is an irreversible step, the cell cycle will not proceed until all the chromosomes are located at the opposite poles of cell.
