The program determined this number based on the elapsed duration against the total planned duration. For example, if the total planned duration for the project is 60 Days and the elasped duration is 10 Days then the program calculates the % completion of the project as (10/60)*100 = 16.6667% that is approximately 16.7%.

Calculating % completion of the project without considering the budget or resource information is not fully accurate. Though it gives an indication of indication of how much percentage of duration has elapsed against the total planned duration, it does not truely reflect the status of the project. Hence any corrective action based on this number is not going to help the project team to meet the deadline.

Percentage completion of project is always calculated using the actual effort in Person Days and the planned effort in Person Days. Thus it takes into account the resource information. Another way of calculating the percentage completion of project is using the actual Dollars spent and the budgetted dollars.
