Answer #1

Given liquid that is 0.3% N2 and 99.7% water

So Xa = 0.003

Xb = 0.997

Given 80 C

Pb of water = 354.70 mm Hg

Pa of Nitrogen = 734456.25 mm of Hg

Total pressure = 0.003 x 734456.25 + 0.997 xx 354.70

Total pressure = 2557.00 mm of Hg

total pressure P = 2557/760 atm

total pressure P = 3.36 atm

ya = XaPa/P

= 0.003 x 734456.25/ 2557

= 0.8617

yb = Xb Pb /P

=0.997 x 354.70/ 2557

= 0.1383

mole fraction of nitrogen and water in vapour phase are 0.8617 and 0.1383

    Henry’s law states that the solubility of a gas is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas if the temperature is constant. Hyperbaric chambers, which provide high pressures (up to 6 atm) of either air or pure oxygen, are used to treat a variety of conditions, ranging from decompression sickness in deep-sea divers to carbon monoxide poisoning. Look up the Henry’s Law Constant (kH) for N2, O2, and CO2 in the textbook. a) Calculate the solubility (concentration in...

    2. A gas mixture at 1.0 atm pressure containing air and solute A is contacted in a single stage mixer continuously with pure water at 30 °C. The two exit gas and liquid streams reach equilibrium. The inlet gas flow rate is 100 kg mol/h, with a mole fraction of A being 0.20. It is desired that the exiting gas contain an A mole fraction of 0.01. Calculate the flow rate of liquid required to achieve this separation. Assume that...

    The set up: In this exercise, weighed samples of a solid unknown containing NaCl and NaHCO3 react with hydrochloric acid. The volume of the CO2 liberated by the reaction in the gas phase is measured with a gas collection syringe. From the volume we can calculate the number of moles of CO2 in the gas phase using the ideal gas approximation. Since the CO2 is generated in an aqueous environment (aqueous HCl), some CO2 will dissolve in the liquid phase....
