REASON FOR HIGH RATE OF INJURY AND FATALITY IN CONSTRUCTION SITES
The construction possess workers and employees under variety of fields irrespective of core or domain such as civil, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, etc. The common issue prevailing over this vast area of comprises unsafe condition and unsafe acts. The most alarming unsafe condition being illiterate on safe practice of doing their corresponding work. The other reasons comprise unguarded equipment and machineries running on high power and higher power and greater volume of electricity with higher resolutions. The improper barrication also adds to fire at greater height and greater depths, which all together put the body part or even life of worker at higher risk. The above reason with some more issues based on mode of construction activity constitute for higher rate of injury and fatality in construction sites.
KEY ELEMENTS OF EFFECTIVE SAFETY AND HEALTH PROGRAMME
A per recommendations of OSHA (Occupation Safety and Health Administration), the key elements of an effective Safety and Health Program are
1. Management Leadership: Involvement of top management for investment in constant program, making safety as core company value.
2. Worker Participation: ensure the workers understands and implements fully their safety rights and responsibilities.
3. Hazard Identification and Assessment: The site must possess safety plan based on job hazard analysis (JHA) for prior anticipation on accidents on that site.
4. Hazard Prevention and Control: Safety team (all management and employee) must work take corrective and preventive action for identified workplace hazards.
5. Education and Training: All employees must be trained on safety and health programs work and its implementation.
6. Program Evaluation and Improvement: Key safety team (core team comprising site project heads and safety team) monitors, evaluates and constantly improves safety and health programs.
7. Communication and coordination for host employers, contractors, and staffing agencies: sub-contractor level teams must commit the same level of safety and health protection to all employees, and ensure safety clearance certificate from safety team prior work.
