What would be the difference between a strengths-based approach and a deficit-based approach to a problem such as “Tommy comes to preschool late almost every day and misses the morning activity.”
can I have 200 words or more, please?
The deficit based model of schooling usually focuses on the student's weaknesses like learning disability rather than his strengths. Here if Tommy has the habit of missing the morning activity this means he is not an early morning riser. So teh approach would focus to try involving him in the activities of his choice so that he may wake up early and look forward to attending the school. This will ensure he does not miss the morning classes. But in a strength based approach, the focus in on the things which a child can do and has strength on. It would rather focus on calling him for an evening school or afternoon time when he can wake up as he wishes late in the morning and then run to school to start his day there.
