Court case that ruled that a defendant's statements to authorities
are inadmissible in court unless the defendant has been informed of
their right to have an attorney present during questioning and an

them.
In the landmark supreme court case Miranda v.Arizona (1966), the
Court held that if police do not inform people they arrest about
certain constitutional rights, including their Fifth Amendment
right against self-incrimination, then their confessions may not be
used as evidence at trial.
The Fifth Amendment right against self incrimination requires law enforcement officials to advise a suspect interrogated in custody of their rights to remain silent and to obtain an attorney, at no charge if need be. Supreme Court of Arizona Reversed and remanded.
