Ans. The case Miranda vs Arizona was Indeed a landmark decision because it gave rise to very famous Miranda Rights that we take for granted today. In the case Ernesto Miranda , a resident of Phoenix was convicted with the charge of rape and kidnapping. The confession obtained by the police during interrogation was used as a evidence against him in the court. He was sentenced to 20 to 30 years in prison. All this happened in 1963 and 64 .
In 1965 , when the case went to US Supreme Court , they reviewed the case and found that when Miranda was detained by the police , he wasn't told by the police about his Constitutional rights ie Right of an Attorney and of Self Incrimination . The Supreme Court ruled that with the absence of these rights , no statement of the accused can truly be the product of his free choice. The Supreme Court said some statements that later came to be known as Famous Miranda Rights. Hence the Conviction of Miranda was reversed and he was retried.
This decision helped in maintaining the real sense of democracy in the country. This decision gave rights to an accused so that He or she can also have a chance of a free and fair trial. This decision removes the compelling circumstances under which an accused can tell his or her story without any fear effectively. This also eliminates the evils in the interrogation process. This decision also ensures that police does not misuse their powers and also helps in stoppage of government abuse . Thus deprivation of criminal suspects of their liberty and various rights was stopped after this landmark judgement.
