An additional action taken by the government to advance equality for all was the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Civil Rights Act of 1964, terminated segregation in public places and forbid employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. It was proposed by President John F. Kennedy in 1963. The Act endured tough disapproval from southern members of Congress. After President Kennedy’s assassin, President Lyndon Johnson addressed a joint session of the U.S. Congress to ask for the “earliest possible passage” of Kennedy’s civil rights bill. The Act was signed into law by Lyndon B. Johnson.
