A COMMUNITY PROJECT ON EFFICIENT WASTE MANAGEMENT AND SUSTAINABLE ECOLOGICAL PRACTICES IN OUR  HOMES

Globally, domestic waste constitutes a major component of the waste generated in terms of the quantity and its deleterious effects. Effective waste management have to be initiated at the grass-root level to bring in expected results.

SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

• Reuse of major portion of domestic waste

1) the food waste can be converted to organic compost which can used as manure for crops. This can reduce the use of chemicals in agriculture and thus reduce other forms of pollution like soil and water pollution. Use of organic manure can decrease the expenditure in agriculture, thus reducing the burden for farmers.

2) water used in kitchen can be reused for toilets and watering plants after proper treatment.

• The segregation of wastes can lead to better management of waste and can help in proper waste reuse and dispersal.
• Reducing the use of environmentally harmful products like Plastic bags, containers and substituting with eco-friendly products like jute products. This can revive the traditional small scale industries producing such eco-friendly products.
• Reducing the waste of natural resources like rain water by methods like rain waster harvesting. This can not only reduce the problem of water scarcity, but also improve the soil texture and ground water levels
• Increasing the use of renewable sources of energy like solar energy.
