Question

In this week's isolation experiment, assume that 53 mg of pure caffeine is isolated following sublimation of the crude extraction product. If 2.92 g of tea leaves were used, what is the percent by weight of caffeine in the tea leaves? Enter your answer as digits only, no percent sign, using the proper number of significant figures.

Answer #1

Percent of Caffeine can be calculated as:

(Amount of Caffeine isolated/Amount of Tea leaves used) * 100

= (0.053/2.92) * 100 (1mg = 0.001g)

= 1.82%

Therefore, % by weight caffeine = 1.82

Introduction: The technique used to separate an organic compound from a mixture of compounds is called Extraction. Extraction process selectively dissolves one or more of the mixture compounds into a suitable solvent. The solution of these dissolved compounds is referred to as the Extract. Here the organic solvent dichloromethane is used to extract caffeine from an aqueous extract of tea leaves because caffeine is more soluble in dichloromethane (140 mg/ml) than it is in water (22 mg/ml). However, there are...

Experiment Write Up Proposal You will write up a synthesis procedure for one reaction that could be potentially run in a face- to-face Chem 2321 lab session. Your proposal will include an introduction and procedure. The procedure will include step-by-step instructions for running the reaction (including reaction monitoring), work-up. (product isolation and purification), and analysis (characterization). You will need to include sample calculations for percent yield and provide sample spectra analysis. You must upload your proposal as a single document...

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
