Momentum collision
A person (m=67kg) is moving down a path at 3.4m/s when you collide, elastically, with another person (m=75kg) who was running directly toward you at 6.5m/s. What are each of your velocities after the collision?

Answer #1

Given that collision is elastic

so both momentum and kinetic energy is conserved.

Consider conservation of momentum

Initial momentum =Final momentum

-----------------(1)

==========================

Consider conservation of kinetic energy.

Initial kinetic energy=Final kinetic energy

Put (1) in above equation

Solve the quadratic equation using a calculator

ANSWER:

    Suppose in a reference frame S, two objects collide elastically. Particle 1 of mass m1 = 2m is initally at rest, and particle 2 of mass m2 = m is moving with an initial velocity of u2i = −0.75c (negative means moving in the −x direction). The two particles collide elastically. Using classical momentum and energy conservation, an observer in frame S calculates the velocities after collision to be u1f = −0.5c, u2f = 0.25c.
