Cell Structure and Survival

Prokaryotic cells (bacteria) have several cell components that may or may not give it an edge when it comes to survival in a harsh environment. Review the cell components of prokaryotic cells once again. Discuss the components of the cell that can help the cell survive and evolve to become stronger and resistant to death.

Answer #1

A Prokaryotic cells is a simple single celled unicellular organism that lacks a nucleus, or any other membrane bound organelles . Prokaryotic DNA is found in the central part of the cell, a darkened region called the nucleoid.Unlike Archaea and eukaryotes, prokaryotes have a cell wall made of peptidoglycan, comprised of sugar and amino acids, and many have a polysaccharide capsule. The cell wall acts as an extra layer of protection, help the cell maintain its shape, and prevents dehydration. The capsule enable the cell to attach to its surface in its environment. Some prokaryotes have flagella, pili, or fimbriae.Flagella are used for locomotion while most pili are used to exchange genetic material during a type of reproduction called conjugation. All these features or components help prokaryotes cell to survive and evolve to become stronger and resistant to death.

Bacterial cells, such as E. coli, are surrounded by a fluid plasma membrane and enclosed by a rigid cell wall that protects the cell from damage. You will recall that there is no nuclear envelope in prokaryotic cells, but rather a “nucleoid region” with a single chromosome that is continuous (circular), not linear, as in eukaryotes. All of the genes required for basic survival and reproduction are found in the main chromosome. In addition to the main chromosomes, some DNA...

The language used is generalized for the non-scientist and does not include any molecular details, such as methylation of a specific nucleotide in an allele or modification of a specific histone tail amino acid. 10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
