Combinational circuits are logical circuits whose output does not depend upon previous inputs whereas sequential circuits are a combination of combinational circuits and a storage element (also called memory element) and their outputs depend upon present input as well as upon previous inputs.

(a) A digital alarm that clock that generates an alarm when a present time has been reached.

  • For this use case, sequential circuits are required because combinational circuits do not have a memory element which can store a time on which alarm has to be generated.

(b) A circuit that turns on or off the classroom light based on the configuration of two input switches. If both switches are in the same position, the light is off. If they are in different positions the light is on.

  • For the above use case, a simple combinational circuit containing two input switches, an XOR gate, and an output switch will do the work as we only require the present state of the inputs to turn the classroom switch on or off.
